I really loved this book. This story is one of my favourites within the Moomin “world”. Tove Jansson does such an impressive job balancing her characters and her world building has such a childlike wonder. This story is hilarious in such charming ways!
this one is sick! i remember not liking this one so much when i first read it but i'm here to tell my child self: you're an idiot

Life, the theatre and everything: in which the Moomins, flooded out of the Moominhouse, readily take to living in a floating theatre instead, learn what the stage is for, and write and star in their own theatrical debut. Glorious for catching the unconscious oddities at the back of people’s thinking, as well as little vignettes and truisms. Plus one of the best pen-portraits of theatre and show people this side of Tynan.
As Emma, the old stage-rat, explains to the puzzled Moomins:
“‘ A theatre, that’s no drawing-room, nor is it a house on a raft. A theatre is the most important sort of house in the world, because that’s where people are shown what they could be if they wanted, and what they’d like to be if they dared, and what they really are.’
‘A reformatory?’ said Moominmamma, astonished.”
