The slow pace and lush prose make this a bit more literary than what I usually gravitate toward, but I did find myself sucked into the story of Miri and Leah. Armfield does a great job of creating atmospheric dread that persists throughout the entirety of the novel. The use of dual perspective also helps to maintain the tension while also helping to provide emotional heft to the overall plot.

Haunting and subtle. Effective in its delivery. Pretty devastating in the end, characters are felt and embraced with the closeness of people whom you’ve known all your life.
