An interesting character study, if not much more than that. Would definitely try more by Zen Cho.

A quick read but it’s good!

Jade is seriously not taking herself serious! I love it. She says what she needs to say without too much regard, but still holding back when she needs. Finding herself in the situation she is, really makes the most of it & thankfully realizes where here heart really is. Very sweet!

Picked this up based on a glowing Dear Author review. Loved the book's tone/narrative voice, the unusual combination of English-set historical romance and Chinese main character, and the narrator's unconventional views about sexuality. Great portrait of 1920s Bloomsbury intellectual society. The only downsides: the story's brevity, and its almost complete lack of character development for the male love interest. Well worth reading, though. Crossing my fingers that Cho will publish more...

A delightful one-sitting story that had me grinning as I read it!

A short, light, quick read. Good palate cleanser. Great dialogue! Jade is a witty, satirical, sassy protagonist.

“A nice Indian servant gave me a drink. . . . I skulked in a corner clutching it and trying as hard as I could to look inscrutable and aloof, but feeling scrutable and loof as anything.”

The methodical, wry, dramatic voice of this story is PERFECT. Jade is hilarious and interesting and this story is exactly the right length.

I've had Zen Cho on my radar for a while, so I was really excited to find that she has this story posted free to read on her blog, and it definitely lived up to my expectations. I thought that Jade was truly charming. Her unique perspective on the world never failed to be amusing, and I liked that she stood by her values, even when things got tough.

I also really liked the exploration of relationships that goes on. In some ways, I hesitate to call this a romance because it's not about courtship and sex so much, but it is about finding a person who's right for you, who values things that you value. To me, that qualifies it. There was also a lot of societal and racial commentary hidden in this story, and I really appreciated that as well.

If this is an indication of what I'm going to get from Zen Cho's other works, looks like I need to keep her high on my radar indeed.

It took me seven days to read this and it's 80 pages long.

Fantastic and fun, but definitely a short novella. I'd love to read a longer version.
