Inventive, sensational and bitingly funny. I was intrigued by this story even though my University lecturer had already 'spoiled' it for me. Read it!
I had never heard of this book or this prolific, popular author until it was chosen for my classics book group. It is part of the origin of the detective story genre. There's a lazy gentleman frittering his life away, until his friend disappears, whereupon he becomes a sleuth, and uncovers all of the titular secrets. There are many improbable coincidences; interesting detail about travel, communication, and identification; and period-appropriate morality: if you are a woman, the only virtue that matters for you is chastity. If you do not keep your sexual parts to the exclusive use of zero or one man, you are toxic and irredeemable. Also, when two men love each other very much, one must marry the other's sister.
Now makes up one on the list of the few Victorian novels (<5) I have not enjoyed reading.

Graphic: Mental illness, Murder
Apparently I read this 5 years ago but very little of it stuck with me, even though it's a pretty wild read. I enjoyed it more after listening to class lectures / discussions about Lady Audley as a commodity, out of place at Audley Court and trying to gain autonomy.
