I was listening to the Alien series because Audible gave me one of their originals. It was ok over the holidays. I could jump in and out of the mindless gore without being fear of missing anything important, while I was with family. This one, however, surprised me. Not only was it interesting, it seems utterly unique in its portrayal of the monster.

The plot itself is a battle of wills rather than mindless survival and the aliens behave more like intelligent animals rather than omnipotent killers. This added unprecedented suspense. In all the other books I've read you can just go ahead and write most people off. They're deaths are pretty much certain. By adding several near misses with the creatures that death became far less certain. It isn't going to go down as one of the greatest books in horror, but it an excellent bit of pulp.

Buddy read with the dynamic duo of Jes and Samm.

A lot of authors who I truly adore have done pop culture novelizations, both TV and movies. Some I've found through that work, and others I've found their other works first, then decided to read their novelizations.

It's kind of amazing to see the difference between the original work and the fanfiction. Some authors can't do originals well, they need an already created world that they can build on and flesh out. There's nothing wrong with that, I love a good piece of fanfiction.

But an author who writes a novelization, then goes on to write mind blowing, explosively fantastic original works?

Well, they're worth their weight in gold.

Kick-ass female main character who pilots a male android body in order to do her research as a lead scientist studying the aliens on a remote space station. She suffers from a progressive disease that has made her bed-ridden. I really enjoyed reading about a main character with a disability, written in a multi-layered and realistic way that neither turned her into merely her disability, nor ignored the complexities that arise from such a circumstance. In other words, she’s a real character with conflicting drives and challenges, just like any well-written main character.
The villain is excellent too. Can’t remember the last time I loathed a villain this much in any book or movie, which is a high compliment to the author. He made me think a little of Gary Oldman’s character in the film Leon (The Professional).
Well-plotted with lots of twists and turns. I did keep waiting for one character to come back after we thought they had died, but they didn’t, which was a shame because they were another good strong character.
Plenty of great Aliens-universe Easter eggs and references. Without spoilers, I’ll say that I enjoyed this even more than I expected to, and I really really love the Aliens universe, so I’m hard to please here.

Started out fantastically but lost some energy as it progressed. I still enjoyed it on the whole and would recommend this book to Alien fans.
