Both these books were a delight, but I think the second is even better and builds so well on the first. I love the tone of the books, the history, and how there’s elements of fantasy but more in how exceedingly lucky and clever all the characters are. There’s a lot of action but also a lot of deep exploration of power, ambition, gender, and gender roles, done beautifully and tenderly. Great story and really good writing.

Wow. This book was so well written and I loved it so much more than the first. I didn't realize that it was a historical retelling of the Ming Dynasty overthrow of the Mongol Dynasty. I'm honestly blown away and so glad I took the time to read it. So well done and lots of thought-provoking content.
After reading the first book I wasn't sure how I'd feel about the end of the duology but I'd honestly highly suggest this book.

very well done but quite intense. (def check content warnings before reading) I liked the complexity of the characters and the ending. I felt weird about both sapphic characters sleeping with men. It fit the story, but icked me out, especially with Ma getting pregnant at the end.
