The beginning was so drawn out but the end ~might~ have been worth reading this series. Overall, not one of my favorite series

I enjoyed this series, I think it was written well! There were a few loose ends I felt didn't wrap up but that's good in a way - you don't want it too perfect.
This book hurts my heart and my frigging head! I went through so many damn emotions, mainly anger and sadness. That's what made this book so good! Reading all the books in a matter of about two weeks, I got attached to the characters. I got to see Ruby grow from a scared little girl to a strong woman who would fight to the death for the one who needed it. Cole, well, how can you not get attached to him. Chubs is less annoying and Vida won my heart. There are a few surprises in this book and there will be ugly cry moments and rage moments when you may have to walk away from the book to remember it's just a book.
The series started a bit slow for me but this book made up for that and I'm glad I stuck around and read them all. I just wish she had an epilogue that will show us how their future worked out for them.If they were able to see the afterlight.

In a market saturated with YA dystopias, it's hard to stand out. I think, after finishing the series, that The Darkest Minds does just that. The premise, while similar to others I have read, is strong enough to feel original and the characters are wonderful. Ruby feels real, and the mistakes she makes throughout the series serve to make her moments of triumph more powerful. While I would have preferred a tighter, shorter story, I didn't feel like I had to force myself to read at any point. The conclusion was satisfying, which can be hard to pull off when dealing with such bleak subject matter. Really well done and I'm glad I decided to give them a try.
3.5 actually, I feel like it dragged a bit to long but good ending overall!

broke my heart and stomped on the pieces but in a good way. incredibly frustrating to read about ruby, liam, and cole’s dynamic.
I am shattered. I started The Darkest Minds a week ago today, and read the entire series (novellas included) within that week. I became so wrapped up in these characters, and their story and development that I became borderline neurotic with worry and emotion. Reading all of the books in a week immersed me in this dystopian world completely, and by the time I was working on the last book I was reading it so QUICKLY that I know I missed things. I was so worried about each character that I rushed it. I don't think it would have been as all encompassing if I had read the books with space between. However, that may not be the case. I genuinely wish I could go back and start over for the first time again.
Bracken does wonders with her dystopian world. While there were parts that I felt she could have gone into more detail (the Reds at the camp?), overall I felt that she left very few stones unknotted. I wish she would write a novella about the after effects - but being left to wonder is its own special kind of magic.
Again, my love for secondary characters became the focus of the story, but I was genuinely invested in Ruby as well-she's such a relatable heroine. I could have done without some of the inner dialogue (I have to protect everyone at the expense of myself, my life is to be used as a bargaining tool, etc) but it wasn't as drawn out as other stories, so I didn't mind.
Chubs and Zu stole my heart again, Liam made me frustrated, Cole worked his way into my soft spot, Nico forced me to take a step back, Vida kicked ass, and that's all I'll say about them.
I know that I have more thoughts about this book but I'm so overwhelmed and depressed at its being over that I can't properly express them.
