oh my god im crying it was so angsty but im so happy with this ending
tdm series overall -id give it 4/5 stars purely for how long it was. all three books were 500/600+ pages and honestly, SO MUCH shit happened to them like a new problem every chapter. on one hand, that seems a little like overkill to me but also its kind of the point of the story, the psi kids can never catch a break and their lives are crap pretty much. i was also Super hoping that cole would randomly show up and the pics of him were fake and im so sad he actually died. HOWEVER im very happy w the ending it was vv cute and hopeful and the reference to judes vision of the future☹️
tdm series overall -
I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S OVER! Oh man!
Believe me, I'm not ready to say goodbye, but damn if it wasn't a great, great ending to a great story. Such a bittersweet experience. I don't even care how frustrated and pissed off I was because of Ruby's and Cole's and Liam's decisions sometimes. The way that I cared about these characters, that I was rooting for them with everything I got... They have been through so much shit, and they ending was so deserved (a little open, yes, but still!)! Alexandra Bracken, you have to love this woman! You just have! Humf. I want to pick The Darkest Minds up and start all over again. Easily one of my favorite trilogies of all time, like... Top 3 all-time favorite, favorite. Can't wait to read more of what Alexandra has planned for us.

for merrilee, emily, and the countless others around the world who have worked tirelessly to put this series into your hands, with my love and gratitude
I had a difficult time deciding on 2 or 3 stars. It's not actually good, but I still like it.
Ruby is still boring. Liam is still more boring. Zu is still a Rue/Prim-ish character without an actual personality. Cole is random and doesn't help the book any. Some adults are there but don't do much.
Still, that leaves some somewhat likable or interesting characters.
1. - I'm sorry, but Ruby's connection with this character still feels way more real than the one she has with her OMGBFFs who she's been hanging around for hundreds and hundreds of pages. This person feels much more like an actual human than most of the Ruby Gang, and I'm glad for even a few pages of interaction. Too few, but whatever.
2. Clancy - I'm pretty irritated at his ending, but he's still more competent and intelligent than the rest of these bozos. I did prefer him when he had more pagetime, but I wouldn't say he necessarily needed more scenes here.
3. Vida - I'm not really into her supposed character development which rings false in a cheesy way, but before she is forced through it she has some cool bitter lines, kinda like a low-rent Johanna Mason:
“I’m happy for you, oh-so-fucking happy for you that you get to have this beautiful reunion with your real friends. You get to stay with these people and shoot the breeze about how great it was when it was just the four of you."
4. Chubs - Okay, so I have a bit of the opposite problem here. He is basically the same as ever when I'd like some organic growth, but that's okay. His grannie-ness is still mildly amusing.
5. Nico - The reveal is a bit...offensive in a perpetuation of certain ideas about a certain group of people. But at least Bracken has mild representation of that group. That's something. And Ruby being all huffy and ignoring of him makes me like him a bit as I do not like her.
Oh, and the climax is idiotic and underwhelming.
Still, the plot is more engaging than it ought to be, and the writing is pretty good, something which really hurts certain popular writers who similarly have premises with potential but aren't particularly talented at writing so end up with bad books. Like, say, Veronica Roth.

It made me feel like an asshole for laughing every time he tripped or walked into something—and I don’t like feeling like an asshole all the time, okay?”“I’m happy for you, oh-so-fucking happy for you that you get to have this beautiful reunion with your real friends.
