Lyrical prose does not save The Virgin Suicides from being unimpressively gratuitous and intellectually lazy.

no a fan. A single sister commits suicide. For what reason we will never know. Then this outside male prospective narrates his point of view of watching the gurls 4 sisters following the suicide. At times i thought the male was creepy. The whole town was creepy. They were obsessed with these girls. The boys would put on the same lipstick the oldest wore and kiss eachother to see what it tasted like. The oldest would sneak guys onto her roof and have sex with them and these boys would watch? And then all the sister decide to commit suicide on the same night after being locked in their house by their parents. Idk i was just bored throughout the story and just kept thinking like mind your business

I love the writing and the dark humor in this book. As someone raised in a fairly strict, religious household, Eugenides does a great job depicting that claustrophobic atmosphere. Some of what he has to say about mental illness and suicide in the concluding pages come off a bit un-empathetic for me. Overall, I think The Virgin Suicides is a well done and well written look at the lives of sheltered, suburban teenagers and the perils of a repressive upbringing.
