I really liked this story for several reasons. One is that it celebrates unconventional fathers, and who has a dad who isn't unconventional in some way? Another is that it shows that there's no need to fear monsters, as they have children, too. And my most favorite part of the book was when the dad said, "Because I'm your dad, I will miss you so much when I'm away and I promise to bring you back big surprises." My own father was away a lot in my childhood, first at work and school, and later at work and on business trips. But I always knew he loved me, missed me, and would come home from his business trips with a surprise. :-)

I couldn't help read this picture book as an unofficial memoir of Ahmet Zappa's childhood with his dad, rocker Frank Zappa. The illustrations are bright and the monster dad described is one that anyone would adore. Ice cream in the bathtub? Don't mind if I do. This book would be particularly awesome for musicians who happen to be Dads.
