beautiful, lyrical, poetic. I cried so many times. Sarah captures the beauty of life so well. This one will stay with me for a long time. It took me a long time to read but I really wanted to savour this one and I’m glad I didn’t devour it, I’m so grateful I got to sit with these characters and watch their lives intertwine. Gorgeous

The Times said it all, “A parade of small stories, intimate connections and complex characters…Sentence after sentence. character by character, Still Life becomes poetry.” Family redefined as it should be, not dependent on lines of blood, but rather on the association of caring, mutually supportive folk, whose interests overlap but don’t necessarily coincide. A recognition and acceptance of the continuing evolution of life and relationships. This was a delightfully satisfying read.

Such a fabulous read, it’s making me fall in love with Italy the way Ghibli makes me fall in love with Japan. Near the end I understood why this book was in Good Morning America’s Book Club, for better or worse. There was something liberal and masturbatory about it all that puts me off slightly but I also can’t help but be comforted by the easy optimism. Most notable flaw of the book imo was Peggy: I felt like she could have been afforded more passages that were from her perspective. Without them things felt very very slightly misogynistic, wrt the trope of a promiscuous beautiful wild mare of a woman who becomes battered by her conservative husband. I did love her journey with Eddie, though. Her, Eddie, Ulysses, and Darnley were by far the juiciest morsels for me. Something about longing and memory…

During these slower days, I got the chance to go back & annotate my physical copy, which I purchased immediately upon finishing my library read.
186 kindle highlights so it took days. And I couldn't get through it without tearing up at multiple gorgeously written passages.
I utterly loved every page of this. The most lovable endearing cast of characters. The story spans decades and I wanted even more years with them.
The love for Florence and Italy is woven throughout and I got so lucky being able to read this on location. I have a feeling when I go back for a re-read one day, this will transport me right back there!
