Lovely book but wasn’t quite in the mood for a slow sprawling slice of life

I tried for the first several chapters, but the lack of ALL QUOTATION MARKS killed me. I kept having to backtrack when I realized someone had been talking so I could read it correctly, and it ruined the story flow. I get that the author was trying to convey a continuous stream of consciousness from an omniscient narrator, but I just couldn’t handle it.

I wasn't expecting to like this all that much. I have read another of her books, the one about God being a rabbit and while I enjoyed it, I was also confused by it. I don't know whether it is because I have so recently almost-died and am therefore in an unusual place, mood wise, but I really loved it. I enjoyed all the characters and the writing and I even liked all the near misses of the characters almost meeting again after so many years. I loved the fact that there were LGBTQ+ characters and storylines but they were not the sole focus of the book and their stories were complex and three dimensional and not cliched.

I highly recommend this book to everyone and will be banging on about it almost as long as I'm going to bang on about almost dying.
