Sarah Winman writes how Michelangelo must have painted, in great detail and excruciating beauty. I found this book to be slower than my usual reads, but only because I wanted to absorb every single syllable to the fullest. There wasn’t a single word that seemed out of place, and so it felt only right to enjoy this book how I would my favourite paintings at the National Gallery.
I’m one of those people who ‘sees’ books rather than hears the story, but when I say I saw this book, I mean I was in it. I was in sunny Florence next to Ulysses, I was in wartime London next to the wittiest parrot ever, and I became close friends with every single character. An amazing tale of lives that weave into one another set in one of the most beautiful European cities, this book is one of the most charming, tender stories I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. Nothing I say could possibly do it justice.
References to war and attempted suicide are among some that you might find disturbing, but they are dealt with in ways that feel very much in line with the rest of the storyline instead of as trauma that hits you out of nowhere. An overall stunning read that somehow also manages to be very human.
