Sarah Winman has an enjoyable writing style here ( I didn't even mind the lack of quotation marks). Knowing little about Florence, I found those parts of the novel held my attention the most.
The last part of the novel (Evelyn's young life in Florence and the EM Foster link) doesn't add anything to the story - I would rather have read more about Evelyn's WW11 experiences.
Overall, this character driven story is, thankfully, filled with interesting people and their experiences in equally interesting historical settings and times. Ulysses is a terrific character and those around him add to his life in many and varied ways while never becoming subservient to his part in the novel. Nicely done, Ms Winman.

An interesting book with a large cast of interesting characters. But I found myself continually distracted by author's choice to not use quotation marks in a book with a great deal of dialogue, In addition, between colloquial English words & lots Italian phrases, neither of which I had the ability to look up, I felt like I was missing a lot! Not inclined to read her other books.
