Beautifull written and explores the themes of non traditional family, unconditional love and acceptance that spans multiple generations.
The narration was initially very difficult to follow; I found it very difficult to distinguish different characters. once my ear picked up the narrator intonation the story became more engaging.

A beautiful love story to Florence, Italy and the people who live there. I really enjoyed this story, the characters and their stories. Just a happy sigh at the end of reading this one.
4.5 - loved so much about this - post ww2, Florence, floods, a Room with a View, Ulysses, London, …. Great characters and relationships that span decades. It was a bit long as some storylines wrapped up but still enjoyed the end parts and bringing full circle. I’m ready to go back to Florence (without huge crowds preferably) to soak it up like the characters in this book).
One must have a room with a view! Caveat for others: I LOVE A room with a view - book and film :)

Very slow start. Overall interesting but had to connect with at first.
Evelyn Skinner is an art historian, in Italy during the War to save paintings when she spends a glorious evening with a couple of soldiers, one called Ulysses Temper with whom she shares a lasting connection. The story follow them both in London and Florence, in a magical and whimsical story about the beauty of life. Full of eccentric characters, glorious settings, and historical detail, it’s about love of all kinds, and the things that bind people together. E.M. Forster also features, so it was almost the perfect book for me, but was perhaps a little heavy on the whimsy, and taking place over so many years perhaps didn’t quite give the depth of character development that might have caused them to burrow further into my heart.

I saved this one for Italy and am so glad I did as it certainly a love letter to Florence. I loved the beauty of their chosen family.

*Looking up flights to Florence*
This book really took me away to Florence. I almost gave up 1/3 of the way in because I didn’t know where the story was going… but once the setting changed I was drawn in. I loved the characters and their development over the years. And of course, the final chapter! *Chef’s kiss*
