This book started out really strong but then it turned out to just be an OK book.  Part of that might simply be my disappointment in the meat of the storyline.  I knew it would be a dual family drama but was expecting the main story to be centered around school integration via busing.  Instead, that was just a minor plot line that didn’t even come about until halfway through.  So, if you like family drama, I would recommend it because there is plenty of it.  If you want something deeper or inspirational, this isn’t it.

3.5 stars. It took me forever to get into this one, and I almost gave up because most of the characters were just so unlikable. I did really enjoy the last half, though. I also saw the big reveal coming a mile away, and I typically don’t put those kinds of things together.

I have a feeling I’ll be thinking about this book for a bit. Lots of topics covered and felt oh so real.

i wrestled with this story a lot. I liked the nuanced portrayal of family dynamics, especially the blemishes we try to wipe away or remove and the scars that remain for years after. Still, i felt it difficult to engage with the motivations of the main characters. This in turn made it difficult to stay locked in to the arc of their journey, ultimately rendering the concluding resolutions hollow.
