Very typical cozy mystery. Not bad, but there's a reason I don't generally read this genre. I always wonder why the police are so incompetent, and it takes some random lady to figure everything out.

This was my first cozy mystery, and I think it's safe to say I've found a new genre.
Overall, it was a quick, cute little read. I've already borrowed the next in the series from my library.
The downside — there were a few things that confused me in the writing that I think were just little mistakes not caught in editing -- I couldn't figure out Mel's size for the life of me which isn't a big deal, but distracted me from the story while I tried to riddle it out (mentioned her being both curvy as a child/teen/young adult but also said she grew up lanky). There was also a confusing part with a dad/brother named Charlie. Either they were both named Charlie, or one was a typo, but it would mention Charlie brother then Charlie dad without any sort of clarification on which we were really talking about -- no Sr./Jr., no "other" Charlie, no "brother, also Charlie," or anything. Again, not a huge deal, but added a little level of confusion that was a turn off.
Some of the characters were also a little ludicrous. But overall, a good story.

Mel's mom jumping right into believing her daughter was a murderer was a little weird.syringaflower's review

Just the right amount of mystery and pacing. For cozy standards, this novel is quite good.
Spoiler
The movie quotes did nothing for me, but it wasn't obnoxious enough to ruin the enjoyment of the story. For myself, the killer was between two people, and one of them turned out to be the one.emilyrose_isreading's review against another edition

A good start to a cosy mystery series, I liked the characters and did not guess the killer until the reveal. I think I will continue this series

I read this for a challenge. I think I need to stop reading these culinary cozies, I keep wanting to bake a cake or a batch of cookies.
