oh this is gutwrenching. i knew as much: kafka turns into a monstrous bug and has a weird relationship with his father. i expected it to be more of a metaphor, but it has surprised me in the approach it took, and it was exactly what i needed. i genuinely can’t find a single flaw in this, the writing style was perfect (thanks to my translation?), even the words fit the context so perfectly, the family dynamics are established so clearly (my favorite part is when grete cries over her mom, her tears pouring down her mom’s face as well), gregor samsa is just one of the most tragic characters i’ve ever read about, the bug “shenanigans” are written exceedingly well, the obvious invisibility of samsa so apparent even when he haunts their thoughts and actions constantly, despite the silence. wowowowow. genuinely a masterpiece.
sad fast-paced

There is so much here to dig into if you are thinking about disability and the way that families (and society) often fail to see their members as individuals outside of their function but at the bottom of it all, this might just be what its like to be a child and an older sibling.

Reading this makes me want to storm into the Samsa household and carry Gregor away from it all, but the tragedy of it all is I don't believe he would  know what he would do with himself outside of his role as the provider and later, the abject representation of his family's anxiety.

This is such a hard one to rate - really gotta think less literally and more metaphorically.

I think focusing on the protagonist being a literal BUG makes for an off-putting but still entertaining experience. Now knowing that Kafka is speaking metaphorically, whether it be sickness or society or whatever, my thoughts on the book have changed a bit. I mostly definitely would like to come back and reread The Metamorphosis in a way that is more befitting to the ideal experience.

Due to the heavy metaphorical content in such a short read, I would really recommend this if you're looking for a read that gets you considering meanings beyond the explicitly written word.

Nothing to say about this really. It was a book.
