"He was determined to discover the underlying logic behind the universe. Which was going to be hard, because there wasn't one."
Rating: 3.75/5
What to Expect:
- multiple pov's
- mix of humor and seriousness
- boy yearning for girl
- mortality, fate and the afterlife
- mistakes were made...
I haven't read a Pratchett book in so long, and I needed a quick read so I picked this up! While it isn't in my top favorites of his, I still found it an enjoyable read overall.
The story revolves around a few main characters - the most prominent being Mort, a boy who has recently become Death's apprentice. Unfortunately, Mort soon makes a Big Mistake by falling in love with someone he is fated to die. The rest of the story revolves around him trying to fix this mistake all while keeping it a secret from Death (who is taking some time off and trying to learn what it means to live!)
I found the story to have a nice mix of humor and serious moments. However, there were some parts that I think were supposed to be funny and didn't work for me. They were just a little too convoluted for me to find funny. I really enjoyed Death as a character - he's charming while not meaning to be, funny yet serious, and loves cats. The world building is great (of course, it's Pratchett!), the multiple POV's were done well, and the pacing was just right.
Really, I think the only reason that it's not more stars for me is that I have enjoyed some of Pratchett's other books way more and comparing this to them - it falls a little short for me. However, it's a great intro to Death, his story and the world around him if you are hoping to get to know Discworld!
