I liked this one well enough, but the hero & heroine were definitely not my favorites. It really stood out to me when I started highlighting tons of lines from the end of the book, and they were almost all from previous characters having cameo appearances here. Sigh and alas.

I love Kresley Cole's writing. The stories are interesting with a healthy dose of action and romance.

PURE KRESLEY COLE PERFECTION

Cradle-robbing special vamp. Tournament for her heart.

Was so waiting for this one

3- 3 1/2 stars
OK... well, I really liked it at first but... it got boring, tedious. It was the same tournament, fighting, meeting, romancing, and then repeat almost through the whole book. It is not the norm for Kresley Cole. Usually the books travel and the scenes change and the plot twists. This really didn't have any major plot twists. It was fun at points, sexy at points, and had some good characters, but it didn't have excitement and change ups like most of her books do. I liked the beginning, until I started to wonder when something different was going to happen, and read, waiting, and then at the very end, when finally something different happened it ended. Too bad the something different at the end wasn't more complex. I feel a little like this was a set up for Melanthe's book. So over all... I liked it, didn't love it like I normally do. Was a little bored more than 1/2 the book, waiting for something more to happen. It is the most emotion, romance driven, of any of the books I've read so far.

For those reading Immortals After Dark, this is an IAD book. It happens almost completely outside of the Dacian realm. It has several characters from the IAD show up briefly. And overlaps Lothaire's story in timeline, extending it just slightly further out. I like that Cole decided to use Romanian as the language of the Dacians instead of making up one, especially since Dacia was where Romanian is today. For an Immortals After Dark reader, it should be read as it continues the overall story arc.

On Re-read- 2nd reread don't remember when the 1st was but I believe after reading Dark Skye and realizing how they had a lot of overlap.
So this one has a lot going on that comes into play in later books in IAD. It happens at the same time as Lothaire but there are spoilers for Lothaire and not really vise versa so I would read that one first. Next, Dark Skye, Shadow Seduction and Wicked Abyss are impacted by events in this book. Dark Skye is happening slightly during and after this. Shadow Seduction the same. Wicked Abyss has a character that is related to the primordial demon and we learn more about him. Re-read actually was interesting in learning these characters a little more.

Not a bad story. I didn't like the heroine. She whined a lot and pined over someone who obviously wasn't interested in her for more than friendship. I liked Morgana and Sabine. I would've love to see more Nix. She can still any book she is in. It was funny to hear the advice that Lothaire provided. Who would've thought he could be so insightful about relationships.

Loved it!
Kresley Cole amazes me with her ability to seamlessly intertwine her books in this series. With each book some essence of the other books comes into play to keep you in touch with the timeline.

Both Trehan & Bettina are great characters. Their story is well told. New characters are brought into play and old ones weave in & out to bring every thing together.

I got so caught up in the story I lost track of time.

I had been putting off starting these books about the Dacians. I was scared they would veer off too far from the Immortals After Dark. They do say that they are part of the series though, so I'm not sure why I let them slip by. In my quest to catch up, I've included them in my IAD run. I've also decided to read them in audio. It is not normal for me to switch media in the middle of a series. Especially to a male narrator. I haven't listened to many books with male narrators so I don't have as long of a list of favorites. I've been assured though, that Robert Petkoff is amazing, so on went the audiobook!

I felt Bettina's youth while listening to Shadow's Claim. Her determination that someone else was destined to be hers didn't ring as a mature relationship. Especially with how that male reacts to being with her. I would have been so embarrassed that I would have dropped it. But Bettina is persistent. I did get annoyed with her. I just wanted her to move on already!

Trehan was just the male Bettina needed. He was experienced and strong enough to protect her. His jealousy did get old, but after everything he was doing and gave up for Bettina, the jealousy was understandable.

Shadow's Claim had my emotions in a riot. The drama of the competition held my attention. I was nervous to see which male would prevail or if Bettina would end up marrying a beast! The world of the Dacians was well built as well as Bettina's realm. It is definitely branching out from our regular IAD locations!

I really enjoyed Shadow's Claim and am excited to see more of the Realm of the Blood & Mist with Lothaire as king! That should make it a real interesting place to be!This review was originally posted on Rantings of a Reading Addict
