Charming. I gather it was badly overhyped when it first came out, which I can see, but taken on its own merits this is clever and sweet. Exactly what I was in the mood for.

You wouldn't think a mystery novel narrated by sheep detectives would be that enthralling, but you would be wrong. This is skillfully and cleverly done to produce a book that is both witty and unexpectedly wise.

A wonderfully inventive whodunnit told from the perspective of the flock of sheep who set about to solve the mystery of their shepherd's murder. With a lot of creative imagery and inventive writing, we get to live as our fleecey friends for the few days that it takes them to crack the case. Very solidly written, and never leaving the reader board, this is a book I'll recommend to everyone for years to come.

A murder solved or attempted to be solved by sheep. Swann does have her sheep think like sheep, or at least they seem to. They still sheep during the course of the whole book, that is they still in character. And that might be the problem I have with the ending. The ending seems almost too pat, though the sheep's reaction to it was well done. The book does start very slow, however, that might be due to the translation more than anything.

If you want a good mystery this is not the book for you. If you like stories told from a non-anthropomorphic animal perspective, definitely give this one a go.

Fantastic! If this were just a half-decent mystery about sheep attempting to solve the murder of their eccentric farmer, I would really enjoy it. But Swann makes it into so much more than that! The writing is excellent, the mystery is complex and layered, and each sheep has a distinct personality! As soon as I finished this, I wanted to start reading it again. Awesome.
