Climate change fiction. Premise was good, but it read a bit like a YA novel. There were too many flashbacks describing all the terrible things that happened in the past due to climate change and not quite enough time spent exploring the present relationships between the main characters. Interesting and kept my attention, but I was not blown away by it.
This is too political for my taste
I don’t like when you can tell it’s clearly the author talking not the characters

This wasn’t the book for me, I suppose. It seemed like it should be, as I’ve been reading quite a bit of climate crisis fiction, but the story never drew me in. The author gets a full star off the rating for not bothering to use quotation marks for dialogue. When I have to guess at where the dialogue has begun or ended and re-read paragraphs to figure it out… well, that doesn’t make for a pleasant reading experience. It’s not “unique” and it’s not “contemporary” writing. It’s sloppy and annoying. (CW: disordered eating)

I really enjoyed the world building of this book. It was felt like a plausible imagining of a future where we let things get almost too close to the end, and then bring it back. Also very real in the imagining of what happens when the transition "ends" and different viewpoints.
However. The actual characters in their present day I did not feel super connected to and some of their defining characteristics felt more like caricatures. *trigger warning* Emi's eating disorder is jarring and while I think I got where it came from, showing how her mom in an effort to tell her how privileged she is she doesn't know hunger so Emi basically becomes anorexic so she does know hunger and therefore feels stronger? The lessons we want teach sometimes have unintended consequences? But it was never really acknowledged how deeply that would have been impacting her physical and mental ability. It felt unnecessary and a bit weird of a character device.

2.5 rounded up to 3 because I did really like some of it.
I didn't have an issue with the 3 POV. I did have an issue with the characters because it was difficult to relate to any of them and they aren't especially likeable. I also have an issue when one character's parts read like YA in an adult novel. Also, Emi's eating disorder was annoying and completely unnecessary. Made me dislike her even more and it should not have been included. The constant mention of songs and artists also got very tedious and didn't really have much relevance to the story. Did the author just want us to know he really knows a lot of songs? So do I but I'm not going to spam a book with that knowledge on every other page. I will admit I skimmed the last 100 pages or so because I was just bored. I also stopped reading the interviews with Kristina in Emi's essay drafts because they just kept droning on and on and I lost interest. While this book is a genre that I usually really appreciate, I won't be recommending this book because there are a lot of books that deal with this topic better.
