This book tries to be a lot of things at once. It falters with an imbalance of the two protagonists; the daughter’s narrative feels YA while the father’s storyline feels like poorly written fiction. I’m not sure why the editor didn’t step in with a stronger hand. I hate to say it (and I understand that authors need to aim for this) but it feels like a bid for a streaming deal at the expense of what could otherwise have been a fun world to explore. So much of this should have been sliced off and saved for a different story.

I finally decided to put it on the DNF pile just 3-4 chapters from the end because I don’t care about any of the characters anymore.

A very topical and engrossing read that hits a little close to home when it comes to its main themes— it is very well researched when it comes to the realism of our climate crisis and what we may find ourselves dealing with very soon, however it does feel a little bogged down in its own lore. Additionally, there is a subplot regarding an eating disorder that is never really addressed, and I found that to feel sour. Overall, I enjoyed it!

I feel like an author has to have a pretty good reason to not use quotation marks to denote when someone is talking and this book just seemed to not want it??

Loved the premise and the characters but the last 80 pages or so were difficult to get through. Also weird references to D&D and Taylor swift. Is that really humanity's legacy after the planet becomes practically uninhabitable?
Other than that it was indeed a cool book
