I mostly enjoyed this novel, but the ending, though not bad, kind of dragged on too long. I kept expecting a surprise of some sort, which never came. Still, the novel is well-written and very timely in our present climate (and I mean this literally as well as figuratively). This is what someone called a post-post-apocalyptic novel, which I'll define this way: most post-apocalyptic novels have an event, after which the world is much different in a very bad way, and is likely to stay at a much lower level of subsistence than what we have now (an all out nuclear war, for instance, or a virus that kills 90% of all humans, ie, The Walking Dead kind of world).

In this story, climate change has devastated the earth, but people managed to turn things around to the point where the world is pretty much like ours again, but with using mostly (or only: it's not 100% clear) renewable resources. Much of the details of the apocalypse is left in the background, and you only know bits and pieces through flashbacks from the main characters. The main plot concerns a group fighting against the slow return to power of the same oligarchs who caused and profited from the disasters 16 years earlier. I can't say this aspect was very credible: a disaster that almost destroys the planet surely couldn't be solvable in even one lifetime, let alone 16 years, but I was willing to ignore that because the remainder of the story is good and believable. All in all, worth the time to read.

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

I may return some day. But reading about a post-climate collapse setting in a Minnesota summer when the weather is in the high 90's with higher humidity and the sun is invisible behind thick wood smoke haze from Canada - just too triggering and terrifying. I want escapism in my fiction, not reality.

an interesting novel that engages with a “post climate change world” (and questions that very premise). the three main characters were caricatured, imo, but it helped get the point across. references to 20th century music definitely felt random
