This took me months to read for reasons no fault of the book. I feel it’s saying something very positive about it that I started it in February, had to sit it down for life chaos, but it stayed on my mind so that it was easy and enjoyable to pick it back up in June. I’m not an expert in ethnographic research like, at all, but this feels like such a fascinating example of what research in general can be. Jerkins ties family lore with ethnographic interviews with scholarly and not-so-scholarly resources. She created something both personal and significant to folks beyond her friends and family. If you know nothing of the Great Migration (or perhaps even if you know something, IDK I knew nothing), have an interest in Black Studies or family history in general, I absolutely recommend.
