Such a terrific journey this book has been! Never faltering in its pace, Victor Lavalle puts forward an excellent rendition of everything together such as first meetings, intense ardour, family love and interweaving all of them with the ills of modern day technology and social media and the haunting fairy tales of the old.
The entirety of the story is that of a suspended reality which I found as much in agreement in praise that Victor received for this book "If the literary gods mixed together Haruki Murakami and Ralph Ellison…". If I were to recommend a book to you about parenthood and intense adventure, this would be my recommendation. Trust me, you wouldn't be let down. For this book is going to stay with you for years to come.

- Mixed feelings on this book.....
- First and foremost. Flushing hometown vibes were CONSPICUOUS. And in so much detail. I was hating mostly bc of the self-insert vibes, but at the end I kind of came around. Forest Park was a great setting for a final boss showdown. Also shortly after finishing this book I saw that the Queens Public Library is advertising Victor LaValle as their headliner guest for their annual fundraising gala which is definitely giggles.
- My mixed feelings mostly come from the strength of the writing combined with my disinterest in fantasy. The first act of this book was so immersive and rich to me, but that faded away as I progressed. There was so much beautiful and creative detail while building the characters, but by the conclusion of the book it felt like a lot of the backstory stopped being relevant as soon as it was recounted. I think I would have enjoyed the book more if it continued on a character-driven path, instead of shifting to a fantasy based plot. Personal preference of course!!
- Even though I didn't really enjoy the majority of the book, it has been very memorable. Maybe it's the Queens vibes but I think about it often while going about my daily life.
- The writing was so strong I'd give LaValle another go!

Started extremely strong. I felt like things slowed down a little towards the middle, which knocks it down from like 4.5 to 4 stars. But overall a very good book. Kept me guessing for a while.

I heel-turned on this after a few weeks sitting on it and decided that it’s just too ridiculous and self-serious. It falls apart, it’s overstuffed, thin as it is.

“Oh, you poor thing. You were begging to be devoured. Maybe it's you your child needed to be protected from. You leave a trail of breadcrumbs any wolf could follow, then act shocked when the wolf is outside your door.”
Wow. A haunting and disturbing story yet so riveting I couldn’t wait to turn the page. The Changeling is a mix of ancient mythology, folklore and modern day challenges wrapped into one story.
