First of all this is a hard read as a mother—the first third of it anyway. What happens is very dark and I’d warn any new mothers against reading it. It’s graphic and sad. Then there’s a lot of potential and ambitious attempts at this dark modern day fairy tale weaving in technology. But overall there’s too much going on, too many themes and you get kind of clobbered with it. Too bad. What he wanted to do was interesting, but did not execute.

Changeling is a roller coaster of love, magic, mystery, and terror. Lavalle writes so you fall in love with Apollo and Emma. My heart hurt as their story unfolded, and I was crossing my fingers that the story had a good ending.

Simply flawless through and through. The tension just built and kept building until the very end. Compelling plot, beautiful prose.
This is one of only a few books that I had originally given a lower rating of 4 stars but then after sitting with it for a while decided it was actually a 5 star read for me. I think about this book often since reading it and the scenes still sit vividly in my head. The writing was just excellent.
