A cozy story about family becomes a monstrous fairy tale while remaining incredibly tender from beginning to end. Feels weirdly like a scathing love letter to millennial parents? Made me never want to have kids. I read this in one five-hour sitting because I had to.

I had really high hopes for this one. It was a really cool premise, but the entirety of the book took place in about 30 pages. The rest of it was misogynistic, annoying, and pretentious. I really don't think this author style and I vibe, to me it was terrible storytelling. The pacing was so off and the point of the story seemed utterly lost in the ostentatious style in which this book is written. I don't recommend.

This was the 2nd book I’ve read from LaValle, the 1st being Lone Women (which might be my favorite of the two). It’s clear he knows how to write a creepy, slow burn of a story and keep readers thoroughly entertained.

This book is on the Time’s 100 Best Fantasy novels. After recently reading The Devil in Silver, I thought I had an idea of what I was in for. This story has so many layers and I enjoyed each one. There’s a witchy librarian, secret New York City islands and forests, dark fairy tales, darker reality, generations of evil, and a new dad at the center of it all. Beautiful and terrifying. I’m sold on Victor LaVelle.

I honestly am scunnered by this book.

It is not what I thought it would be, and I just... have no words.

As a parent, the first third to half of this book was like a nightmare. The unthinkable happens, life tearing out from under you, the idea of living without the people who make up the parts of you that are broken.

Then the story gets... weird.

The last 50 or so pages are the embodiment of these emojis:

As long as you don't go into this expecting a fantasy novel, you'll be fine. There's nothing inherently wrong with the writing. Just a complete trainwreck when it comes to introducing, integrating, and revealing the fantastical elements.

Horror spoopy

This was really good. Deeper and more than I expected.
I got impatient at the end so I didn't rewind a part that I napped through.
The nap is not a reflection on the book or the narrator. It's a compliment to my cats snuggling and purring me to sleep.

I believe I saw this is also a thing in Apple TV. One of the few streaming I don't have. If like to check it out but uuuuugh so much streaming.

Ok back to the book.
If you like spooky, I'd recommend it.

Possibly a trigger warning for it being a baby ...? I know one person for sure who wouldn't read this based on that so I wanted to add it.
