Having just finished "The Disaster Artist" which used a lot of quotes from this book as chapter introductions I decided it was the good time to switch this one from my 'to-read' pile to my 'read' pile. Fascinating novel that takes you inside the mind of a sociopath to see what leads him to carry out his crimes and how he justifies them to themselves. Brilliant in that while you are horrified, occasionally you start to slip into rooting for him before you quickly catch yourself and remind yourself that he's a despicable protagonist, not to be too closely empathized with.

Highsmith might rightly deserve 5 stars for this work, but is a bit of a suspenseful thriller which is not one of my preferred genres which is why it's not a 5 star for me.

Pretty great I was a little intimidated at first cus I’ve never really read like this genre of book ig but it was a pretty easy read I love the setting honestly Tom was really funny with his hatred for Marge like he’s just like me and the fact he was able to get away with both murders was crazy and basically assume dickies role and identity that’s what it took was killing him to do that. To think that if anything Herbert had a part in dickies death when seeking out Tom to convince dickie to come back to America unknowingly sending his murderer 😜. But yeah Tom’s character was really interesting and overall it kept me wanting to read more and know what will happen next even though it isn’t like a thriller or like who done it ya know this would probs be my ideal like mysterh book or murder book ig so yeah I think I’ll watch the movie tonight

It struck Tom like a horrible truth, true for all time, true for the people he had known in the past and for those he would know in the future: each had stood and would stand before him, and he would know time and time again that he would never know them, and the worst was that there would always be an illusion, for a time, that he did know them, and that he and they were completely in harmony and alike.

I really enjoyed this book: the summer mirage of Europe spilling through the pages, the cast of characters, being in Tom's head and the lines he blurred to excuse the things he did. I didn't know this was a series prior to starting the book, and I'm now interested in reading more.

(read for the laufey book club)
