Alien and familiar at the same time. As a person brought up in a church, a lot was familiar although my church was in Britain and was about as much of a contrast with catholicism this you could get. The familiar struck home and was both nostalgic and thought-provoking. The light-hearted mixed with the very strange. The moments when you realise that she was, slightly obliquely, talking about the scandal of rape and abuse in the Catholic church and how it was covered up, really hit home.

I enjoyed the first 60% of the book more where it was more storytelling.

The language was beautiful and surprising.

DNF at 60 percent. I enjoyed the writing but the narrative slowed and the writing wasn’t enough to carry me through to the end.

This is a beautiful, bizarre memoir that is equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking. If you're looking for a straightforward narrative with a clear message, this isn't for you. Lockwood is a poet, and her memoir is more impressionist than literal; the language is surreal but totally deliberate. It's also very, very funny and dirty. A completely unique book.

Funny and sad-and angry? So many highlights
