Reading Under the Covers

This book isn’t my typical kind of book. I am not into crime books but this book has been sat on my shelf since the day it came out. After tidying up my bookshelves I came across this book again, the cover drew me in and the blurb got me. It didn’t sound like a typical crime book and I thought why not give it a go and I am so glad I did.

If that thing called sleep didn’t exist I would have read this book in a day. I was just so captivated and intoxicated by this book. I dug it’s claws in and wouldn’t let me go.

The story was amazing and kept me wanting to know who was killing the Violets themselves. Every twist and turn, every break in the case just kept me reading. I wanted to know who was murdering these violets.

The characters themselves we’re amazing. They weren’t you stereotypical characters, or well stereotypical characters that I imagined them to be before I read the first page. These characters are complicated and just human. Vulnerable and very human. And that is what I just came to love about them.

I think one of the elements that drew me to actually read this book was the slight hint of the supernatural abilities that the Violets posses. The one in which they are able to summon dead people and that is what got me intrigued.

Although I was shocked by some things and really annoyed by other things (not in bad ways) I actually really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to dig into the next one.

Ugh, I don't even know where to start with this. Cliché story about a fallen FBI agent who tries to redeem himself. Has to protect a woman, they end up falling in love (of course), and he dies. She ends up being pregnant with his child at the end. Gag me with a spoon. A suspense story should not be so obvious. I like the whole premise of the Violets, but every law enforcement officer in this story (cop, FBI, CIA) seems completely inept. The main character (FBI guy) seems so naïve.

Furthermore, the descriptions of the characters are terrible. "...in walked a Chinese American male..." Really? How did you just happen to know that? Did he have "Chinese American" tattooed to his forehead? Every character is described this way...except the white people. You know, because we can just assume they're white since he doesn't mention it. Kudos to the author for including a large multi-cultural/racial cast, but there's gotta be a better way of telling us these things.

Dan Atwater is the FBI agent assigned to protect Natalie Lindstrom, a Violet in touch with the murder victims who were her friends. Atwater needs to keep Natalie safe and alive, for her sake and to help solve the murders before more Violets are killed. The two opposite personalities learn to work together. Both need to overcome their pasts and learn to get along.
I can't imagine what it must be like for Natalie, bombarded at all times with dead souls 'knocking' to get her attention so that they can be heard and somewhat live again if only for a little while. Violets are born with the ability and there isn't a way to shut it off, only control somewhat to have as normal life as possible.
Five intense thriller beans......

Violets are people with violet eyes who are conduits for the dead – meaning a murder victim can testify at their killer’s trial. In this very intriguing thriller, someone wants Violets dead and FBI agent Dan Atwater must team up with Violet Natalie Lindstrom to catch the killer. One of the better thrillers I’ve read.

This book was suggested to me by a co-worker as an intriguing thriller. I had never heard of Stephen Woodworth or any of his novels. There are a couple of aspects of this book that are still unclear to me, but I am looking forward to reading the sequel. I love edge-of-your-seat reads and this definitely satisfied.
