Tl;dr I think the man was supposed to be likeable, he just wasn't. He needed therapy but depended on the women around him to provide it. He felt a little dangerous. If you've ever been in an emotionally abusive relationship, don't read this. Sex scenes were good though.

It was okay. The story was sad and it definitely kept my attention. I'm just tired of the "women will fix men" storyline.

The book starts out in Tate's point of view and it seems like she's going to be the main character. Then it switches to shorter chapter that are Miles' pov. But miles was very clearly the main character. He's a troubled guy, a successful pilot at the ripe age of 24.. he's even promoted to captian during the story.

Meanwhile we barely learn anything about Tate. That's fine, it's just not my cup of tea to have (who I perceive should be) the main character be so 2 dimensional while the love interest's character is so fleshed out.

Also, they're 22 and 24 and established in their careers which feels unrelatable.

Anyway, the entire time, Tate is hoping Miles falls in love with her and he's emotionally unavailable and has been for 6 years. You don't find out why until nearly the end, when you find out he'd had a child with his high school sweetheart, got in a car accident while Miles is driving them home from the hospital, the newborn dies, and the girlfriend leaves.

So Miles cuts himself off from love and happiness but of course, things change when he meets Tate.

Honestly, he treats Tate pretty terribly, even if it was just a hookup situation. He does things that scare her and you kind of assume he doesn't realize he's doing them, until the end when you get his present day POV and you realize he's not clueless. He can read her, he just doesn't care. He doesn't mind intentionally being mean or intimidating to her.

so in the end, he thanks Tate for "waiting for him." Which is valid for her and was her choice to wait for him. I'm just tired of that storyline if "if you wait long enough, you can fix him!" And he also had to find the high school sweetheart, shows up at her house so she can console him. He literally just shows up in her life in an entirely new state, not caring what that would do to her or her family. She didn't tell him where she was, he found her and just inserted himself so she could give him free therapy. It was cringe.

I had been interested in picking up a Colleen Hoover novel for a few years simply due to her polarizing popularity, and I will say that I’m glad that I chose this one as my first foray into her writing. While it wasn’t the most groundbreaking romance that I’ve ever read, I did enjoy my time with it. I think this is the case because I didn’t find this one as outwardly offensive and controversial as some of her other works are described as being.

We follow our main characters Tate and Miles as they navigate a “friends with benefits” relationship, which I think is very realistic and relatable (especially in this day and age). I didn’t find this dynamic “toxic,” as it was a consensual relationship and Miles was upfront about his expectations from the moment they discussed having any type of physical relationship. I will say I didn’t love the “woman tries to ‘fix’ the man and erase his dark, traumatic past” trope, and that turned out to be the toxicity in the relationship at times.

The story was told in dual POVs and alternate timelines, with Tate’s being present day and Miles’ being six years prior (and surrounding his previous relationship). I liked this format, but I do wish Miles’ chapters were longer, and not written in a verse-like style.

Miles’ previous relationship with Rachel was the main aspect that I didn’t enjoy. Their dynamic was just weird and VERY unnecessary
them being step siblings added NOTHING to the story - they could’ve just been classmates and their traumatic event would’ve had the same impact in my opinion
. I also wish that Tate found out about Miles’ past a little bit earlier in the story, because although they were f**k buddies, their romance felt a little too insta-lovey for my liking.

Ultimately, I would recommend this to anyone new to the new adult romance genre who is looking for a quick, steamy and emotional love story.

ehhhh i found the writing pretty weird. it read like someone writing in their diary which is fine if that’s the layout and plan but it really didn’t feel that way. the poetry thing really made so since and it wasn’t even like it was good poetry or useful to the story in any way?? i honestly like miles and rachel better than miles and tate but i can’t say that i even like miles. the actual story was pretty good but i guessed what was gonna happen sooo early on that i didn’t feel any emotional gut punch or cry it just happened and then it was over.
i don’t like the idea that you put up with getting treated like nothing just because a guy is hot and gives you good orgasms.
the story did pull me in and i enjoyed some of it but most of it i was either rolling my eyes or prettttty bored.

There was not a single moment in Miles and Tate's relationship that was not absolutely smothered in red flags why is this so highly rated.
Also the sex scenes are just poorly written and repetitive, which is a pretty bad thing when the relationship in question is based purely on sex and it being super good.
TBH I could write an in-depth review of this but I don't really want to think about it anymore so I'm not going to.

AH. THIS WAS SO WORTH IT.
I’m so glad this was my first Colleen Hoover book it felt like the perfect introduction.
I’m in love with Miles 😭 I don’t like sad books but this was perfect just the right amount of angst.
So glad I read this and will be trying out Colleen’s books again!
