I found book interesting read and I like the characters but the story was slow paced for me. Only problem is I didn't know at eleven book in series so my opinion where I read the books before is one.

This is really a tale of two books. There’s plotting and there’s characterization. In terms of plotting, 11th Houris a step ahead of most of the Women’s Murder Club novels. The primary plot is a true mystery and Patterson and Paetro manage to drop just enough clues to not make it obvious. The secondary plot is thrilling in its own right, but also serves as a distraction of sorts that keeps readers from focusing too hard on the first plot’s mystery. It’s a combination that works well and left me guessing at where the story was going.

Characterization, however, is another story. The Women’s Murder Club is now eleven books long. There are characters and relational storylines that have been developed from the beginning. 11th Hour proceeds as if none of that matters. At the end of 10th Anniversary, we discover that Lindsay is pregnant. She’s in her mid-thirties, began the series with the scare of a rare disease, and this is a high-risk pregnancy. Despite that, she’s suiting up and going on extended chases and gun battles. It’s almost as if Patterson and Paetro forgot they got their main character pregnant. Nobody mentions it. Nobody even says “Hey, Lindsay, shouldn’t you be taking better care of the baby?”

And then there’s the relational drama between Joe and Lindsay. Well, it’s relational drama with Lindsay. She thinks that Joe is cheating on her, with only the scantest suspicion that anything is wrong. It turns out that the authors are trying to foreshadow something—I won’t say exactly what—but it comes across as Lindsay being paranoid, suspicious, and not at all a good detective. Also following the thread of characters behaving out of character, a major part of the book involves a killer targeting drug dealers. All evidence points to the possibility of a rogue cop and, for some reason, Lieutenant Brady gets the idea that Chief Jacobi—Lindsay’s former partner—is the killer. It’s the dumbest attempt at a plot twist. It’s not Jacobi, obviously, but if it was it would have been infuriating as well. Patterson and Paetro put themselves in a situation where whatever they wrote was a stupid character decision.

Get beyond that, and 11th Hour’s murder mystery involving decapitated heads buried in a garden does make for a compelling and page-turning thriller. The secondary plot about a serial killer out for revenge against drug lords is pretty generic, but plays out well. Overall, this is an above-average installment of the Women’s Murder Club. I just wish we could have good stories and good characterization.

11th Hour
Women’s Murder Club, Book 11

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series.

Media Type: Audiobook
Source: CCP Library
Dates Read: 1/14/22 - 1/16/22
Stars: 3

The Characters:

Lindsay Boxer: Police detective
Clair Washburn: Medical Examiner
Yuki Castellano: Attorney
Cindy Thomas: Crime desk reporter

The Story:

There were some changes in the book, namely the narrator, that distracted me from the story. While I was in for the mystery the back and forth got old a little quickly and the ending wrapped up entirely too quickly for all of what was going on. I think more attention needed to be given to the personal issues but it is what it is. I was still hooked and am going to get to the next story soon.

The Random Thoughts:

I was really excited about Murder Club 11, I thought with Lindsay now being pregnant we'd get to see a softer side to our SFPD cop. Instead we got a book that seemed to go nowhere.

It was nice to see a return to the format of two cases focused around police work with no courtroom dramas. The two police cases though were a little weak in this book. A case of a rogue cop shooting drug dealers and one about two severed heads turning up in a movie stars garden. They promised excitement but in all honesty the cases were pretty suburban. The rogue cop case was pretty dull overall and the severed head story promised intrigue and glamour and instead it was just a little odd.

Throughout the book we rarely have Lindsay's pregnancy referred to, only when Patterson remembers is it brought back in for it then to be moved on from and we lose a story which could have been so good.

Overall a pretty weak instalment of the series.

I did enjoy this one a little bit more than other. The cases were really interesting and intriguing. I was annoyed with how Lindsay was handling some of her personal issues but I guess I can't be to picky about it because I've never been in that situation, but to be fair she was really dramatic I feel over something that if she had given the time of day to just listen, might have been solved sooner....
