I have always wondered why women seek the companionship of notorious murderers of the most depraved variety. Is it because they are hoping to “fix” them; to nurture them back to a productive member of society? Is it because they are gullible and easily manipulated and believe the prisoner when they say they they’re innocent? Is it because the woman is just as much of an awful person as the prisoner and, therefore, seeking a kindred spirit?

Well…”Gone to See the River Man” will give you some insight into this phenomena and more. You will feel one way as the characters are introduced, but as the characters continue their journey up the river, the layers start to peel away and reveal aspects of the main character that will leave you no choice to but to do a 180 on your original feelings about the character.

The story is dark…very dark. And the topics explored can be triggering to some. It gets under your skin and makes you wonder what makes someone go so wrong to make them commit the most awful crimes, and what makes others “fall” for them.

🚨🚨 I give this 4 stars and no more because I hate reading about things like sexual abuse and harm towards children. I know there’s context given in the story, but I can’t help but wonder if there was a less graphic way to get the point across about how disgusting of a person Lori is other than incest and sexual assault.

Some people say the ending is not predictable but I say it becomes pretty obvious what's going to happen around the halfway mark. The main character also becomes more and more unlikable as the story goes on. Other than that, it's great.
