KYLAR mothafuckin STERN ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book would’ve gotten a full 5 stars out of me but I struggled so hard getting into this book, the world building stage was a little rough but BOYYYYY when I got sucked in it was hard to pull me out!!! I’m so excited to start book 2! I loved watching Kylar evolve in this book! Kylar is the real “shadow daddy” in the realm of book boyfriends , but y’all aren’t ready for that topic

This book would have been a solid 5 out of 5 for me. Due to some content early in the book, I immediately knocked it down to a 3. HOWEVER, Brent Weeks rallied and it ended at a 4 out of 5 with me definitely finishing this series soon.

Positives:
⭐️Excellent World Building
⭐️Each characters character was created plainly laid out shortly after they were introduced. Like, people might have had some skeletons in their closet; but you could tell the nature of a person super quick.
⭐️Plots on plots on subplots on plots
⭐️Just like in real life, all the characters have their own motivations.

One Glaring (and triggering) Negative:
⭐️There is some fade to black child on child SA. It is heavily implied in the first few chapters and then it becomes clear that it happening. It felt unnecessary and pulled me out of the story because I was instantly angry. It might not have the same affect on everyone, but it was rough for me and knocked the book down by a whole point. It also made me have temporary beef with Brent Weeks because no active imagination needs those images in their mind.

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Part of me wants to give this a 1 star. But, in reality it was mostly okay. I listened to the audio book and was somewhat interested but had a hard time retaining what I listened to. It often felt as though I had unintentionally fast forwarded through much and then had to once again figure out what was happening. I didn't finish, however. It all ended for me in a scene with a drunken tirade. I get that it was supposed to be gritty and harsh but "F@#!" was over used, even though it was contextually correct. And I may just be a stick in the mud but the "C" word has no place in anything.

If you are okay with the language you may enjoy this book. I was initially drawn to it because it was a new idea in the fantasy realm but I won't be going forward with the series

"Ok" sammanfattar den här boken rätt bra. Jag blev aldrig uttråkad när jag läste boken, men jag sögs aldrig riktigt in heller. Storyn, karaktärerna och världsbyggandet var allt rätt platt. Världsbyggandet känns som den sämsta biten tyvärr, känns lite simpel och inget jag blev investerad i.

Det finns dock potential att det blir bättre, så kanske ger följande delar en chans.

Slow going and reading 4 other books at the same time- just not grabbing my interest right now might circle back later

A story about a lost orphan boy, a kingdom, and one legendary AF man. Second time through the book. The graphic audio is amazingly done. Really brings the characters to life in a new way and was just as good as the first time I read it. Brent Weeks will not disappoint you if you're looking for a gritty fantasy series
