Interesting to see how the vampire myth was told before Dracula. Many of the same beats, but tried to hold onto the vampire "mystery" until much later in the text. The codependent relationship was more present in this book, at least, and more than I thought you could get away with from this era.

A much more interesting listen than Dracula was, although you could tell they were drawing from the same sources. The vampire myth is a really interesting one!
I was bothered by the suggestion that lesbian love is somehow wrong or bad, but you have to take these things as being from their own time, it could've been worse.

3.5 stars. The first half of the book was suspenseful and is paced pretty well, the writing is also stunning (but tell me why some sentences were half the damn page long omg). I found the ending unsatisfying as it happened in one big dump of info and I would rather have seen it build up and have information released in bits instead; but the information presented is fascinating and I enjoyed the story aspect of it. I do appreciate a short book, but I think this would’ve benefitted from being longer, what’s the deal with Carmilla’s mother and their way of securing victims?? I probably would’ve liked it more if I had not known it was a vampire story from the start also.
