Interesting to see how the vampire myth was told before Dracula. Many of the same beats, but tried to hold onto the vampire "mystery" until much later in the text. The codependent relationship was more present in this book, at least, and more than I thought you could get away with from this era.

I guess it takes a 19th-century Irishman to write good lesbian sensuality. Notwithstanding that this was not a romance.

(Fourth book of the year with a (tiny) Hungarian-related thing in it: "My mother was of an old Hungarian family, and most of these pictures, which were about to be restored to their places, had come to us through her.")

A much more interesting listen than Dracula was, although you could tell they were drawing from the same sources. The vampire myth is a really interesting one!

I was bothered by the suggestion that lesbian love is somehow wrong or bad, but you have to take these things as being from their own time, it could've been worse.
