This book I think is a precursor to the probable beginning of vampire literature, so it has an excuse behind its faults. This book might be entertaining if you don’t have any real experience with vampire literature or media and you’re queer. It has queerness between the lines, but to me it was a very predictable, unentertaining story.
I read the version edited by Carmen Maria Machado. And while I can’t say that their editorial additions added much to the story, I will say that I think the history/inspiration behind this book is probably more interesting than the novel itself.
There were very few moments where the dark, gothic beauty of vampirism shined through or offered up any interesting philosophy. Which is what I really look for with vampire media. It was still a pretty fun, short read tho. It was just towards the end of the book as the plot unfolded that I began to lose interest.
It’s an old story though I can’t really bash it for not being good enough for my modern brain and its like…modern desires I guess idk. Still though personally I found it hard to appreciate it in any classical sort of sense. I’d recommend it for a short fun read, if you’re between books or something.
Tbh I think the Vampire Chronicles has spoiled all other vampire stories for me lol.

Interesting to see how the vampire myth was told before Dracula. Many of the same beats, but tried to hold onto the vampire "mystery" until much later in the text. The codependent relationship was more present in this book, at least, and more than I thought you could get away with from this era.
