Thanks to a tip years ago, I got put on to Murakami and really enjoyed his work. I was told that this is where it all started.

Wow. Tales of the surreal, told with humor and an almost palatable "what the HELL is going on here?" vibe, really comes alive. He does so much with so little; his talent for describing and setting the scene is great, and his characters kind of go through it with something akin to blind faith but more than a hamster's inkling that something bigger is going on here.

“The Second Bakery” would make a great short film.

In these stories murakami injects magic and absurdity into everyday monotonous lives that everyone relates to, it is boring albeit safe sometimes to be an adult so all elements of insanity i awaited like a breath of fresh air, from the 12 stories there were 4 i absolutely loved 5/5 one i actually printed to have at home, yet some were run of the mill with no meaning or purpose in sight

I'm not normally a fan of short stories but made an exception. I struggled with a few towards the end but got strangely upset just now that I was coming up to the last page.

I have read almost all of Haruki Murakami's novels (well, the ones translated into English) but this is the first time I read his short stories. One can easily see the potential of each story, how each could become one of his novels. All the material he explores in his novels are there: the border between the unreal and the real, and how easily this border can become blured, dancing, unusual animals, his profound empathy for his fellow human beings, his sensitivity to people's deep wounds and hurt, dreams overspilling into the day past our awakening.

Like most short story collection, some stories I wasn't so fond of, some will stay with me for a long time: Sleep, Barn Burning and Lederhosen particularly.
