I DNFed this book 5 chapters in and went back to it because I was intrigued by the cover.
I enjoyed the straightforward and clear writing. Apart from this point, I really struggled to make progress. The building of the story is incredibly slow. The first third of the book is made with vague foreshadowing and the presentation of the life of an ordinary teenager. The ableism of the fairytale part was frankly exhausting. I don't recommend it to any disabled people.

"You'd risk your life and sanity for the dog?"
"I love her."
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A haunting and darkened version of The Wizard Of Oz. I really thought I was going to give this 5 stars. The idea of doing literally ANYTHING for a dog (even going to another world and risking your entire life on something that might not even work) is something I can completely get behind. However, the ending of this just got a little too weird and over the top even for my tastes. I recognize this is high fantasy which isn’t my usual genre, so that’s honestly probably more on me than the book. My only other complaint was the length of this; the pacing of our world vs the other was just very disjointed to me and threw me off. Despite these, this was a solid read and one of King’s that I really liked of the ones I’ve read so far. Between this, Billy Summers, Later, and Joyland, it’s safe to say I prefer Stephen King’s newer works and will continue to pick them up.

Some of the content gets really ableist in this book and uses disability as a punishment for some different characters. It really ruined my desire to continue reading after getting about halfway and is disappointing to see in a prominent author like Stephen King. Disability usage in fairytale stories for punishment/evil or a derivation of the norm and failure is a tired practice that I wish would end. There are far better ways to evoke horror and punishment outside of stigmatizing the disability community and this book isn’t it.

There are way too many ableist tropes in this for it to be an enjoyable read. Grace Lapointe wrote a great piece about it on Medium.

I found the book too long, overly wordy and slow. I also didn't like the representation of people with disabilities/facial differences.
