Stephen King is one of the most famous authors of all time for a reason, what a story! A thick, rich plot that keeps you hooked the entire reading experience. A protagonist you fall in love with, and a fantastic world you can create around yourself as you read. This book is powerful in many ways including Charlie’s realizations about Mr. Bowditch at the end and the motto of the book “cowards give gifts” and so much more. If you like fantasy, complex storytelling, and alternate worlds you are sure to like this book. Highly recommend. 27/30 because the only downside to this book is some sections feel dragged slightly.

I kept putting this book on the back burner, thinking I’d get back to it since I’ve already put so much time into it. After realizing it’s been over a month since I last read it, I’ve finally decided to just DNF.

This is kind of a weird one. I do like the relationship between the main protag, Charlie and his dog Radar. There are genuinely moments that make you go awwww, especially if you’re an animal lover. However, this book really should’ve been edited down. You just… kind of forget you’re even reading a fantasy story. By the time you get to any fantastical elements, you’re already nearly 200 pages in (according to my Kindle) and the first few characters Charlie meets in the other world are so dull I found my attention slipping.

Honestly, I eventually read a synopsis and the next several hundred pages sounds like uninteresting fantasy tropes, including Charlie’s hair and eyes changing color to show he’s the Chosen One.

Hate to admit it’s an absolute slog of a book.

i don’t think stephen king gets enough credit for his ability to write coming of age stories. don’t get me wrong— i love his known talent to scare the daylights out of you with words, but stories like this stick with you in a different sense. he manages to draw you in and care about these characters and their wellbeing to a point of reading chapter after chapter until its 2am (guilty). this reminded me a lot of the energy i got from reading his book the institute, aka one of my favorite reads to date.

now if you’ll excuse me, i’m going to write a dungeons and dragons campaign centered in empis. radar obviously included.
