The setup was interesting, and definitely carried the book through the first half (part of the reason it’s one of the worst books I’ve read is that usually I would have dropped it much sooner), but the writing was bad. Short and choppy sentences, which was probably exaggerated by the short and choppy chapters. The number of lucky breaks they got (being shipwrecked on an island) became amusing (oh look, my suitcase with the plethora of toiletries I packed!) and I did find that after about a quarter of the way in the author started to use compound sentences, but it was still surprisingly bland. I didn’t really get a sense of these characters or their feelings as we just bounced around from one event to the next.
The second half of the book after they’re rescued slows everything down and highlights the poor writing when there’s no suspense to distract from it. Almost every single person was clueless when it came to how to act around people who went through a traumatic experience (yes, let’s all ask them to tell their stories and keep repeating what an “ordeal” that was!), they have a break where of course the woman has no sex but the man does, and worst of all for me, a horrendous scene with a therapist that’s just dropped there to encourage the continuation of stereotypes. I can’t believe this was on my list for so long.
