I really don’t know why I didn’t finish this. I’m ace - this is a book FOR ME. This should’ve been like…the best book ever. And it was. I liked it. It just…idk. Wasn’t my vibe I guess.

as someone who’s on the aromantic spectrum and is asexual, this is an amazingly accurate depiction of an ace/aro person. when i was younger i’d make up crushes on boys in my class because i thought i needed to have a crush like the main character did and i loved seeing something i went through in a story. along with showing that not all of the community is accepting of all lgbt people and that sexuality and romantic attraction aren’t always the same, this is one of my favorite lgbt books.

growing up in a heteronormative society that expects you to do the whole nuclear family thing makes you feel like somethings wrong with you. seeing a character in a book i adored accept themself helped me accept that i’ll never love in the way that i’m supposed to, and that’s ok. if i had read this when i was like 9 i would’ve identified as aro and probably would’ve accepted myself a lot earlier than i did. i’m demiromantic so that would’ve been confusing down the line, but i’d be happy with myself. and that’s why representation matters.

gushing about the amazing representation aside, the shakespeare thing was really great. a college setting was a perfect place for this type of story and a mix of the romantic subplot and theater was really entertaining. if you haven’t read this book yet, i really hope you do.
