I loved reading this so much. It was exciting, tense and inspirational. Little lyra is incredible and her attitude is aspirational even to me as an adult. Whilst this book is written for children it is so impressive and enjoyable for all ages. I would thoroughly recommend this for anyone who enjoys fantasy, adventure, inspiration and even philosophical pondering!
unfortunately must now wait for the next ruth wilson audiobook to come out to (re)read the rest, as i’m not a fan of the author-narrated audiobooks
I gave this book five stars because originally it was one of my favorite books as a child, so my rating still stands.
Even though Goodreads says this was my second time reading it, it's more like my nth time, because I read it so much as a kid during elementary school (fun fact, this book was published the same year I was born!) My sister had to read it for a college class, and ended up giving the book to me. I remember having a hard time pronouncing Pan's full name, so I'd always just read it as Pan. I also remember having trouble fully understanding just what a daemon truly was. This was my first time reading the book old enough to understand it all.
I started reading it while watching the new show (which I also love), so it was fun to see what they kept the same from the book and what was different. i think it's such an easy read and I can't wait to finally read the sequels to find out just what exactly Dust really is.

Spoiler
but killing Roger made me realize I hate Lord Asriel!!!
I'm not a huge fantasy fan, but ended up liking it more than I thought I would - a solid 3.5 stars for me. I won't recap the plot here since there are a million reviews on it. I'll likely pick up the next book in this series (it's a trilogy) just to see what happens. I liked Lyra's character.

This was my second fantasy novel and absolutely enjoyed the world and the character development.
I was very disappointed in this book. So much of it was page after page of stilted dialogue, vomiting out exposition. There was also a huge amount of "telling" instead of showing. For example, there was a six-page conversation that ended with character A telling character B to wrap up tighter in blankets because she was cold. Character B then agreed that she was colder than she had ever been and the scene ended. At no point in the previous six pages did she shiver or see her breath or in any way think about the cold. It's very unimmersive and really detracts from the plot.
Was it a kids book? Yes. Did I enjoy it? Yes! I hoped it will have an end and I could decide if I need to continue or not. Probably I will have to read all three of them. Why only 3 stars? I want to be a bit harsher with my ratings from now on.
I really enjoy the world that Pullman created; it's enough like our world that you can relate to the surroundings but the magic within it makes it vastly different.
My favorite part is the idea of the daemons and how you gradually learn about them throughout the story instead of all at once. I was able to figure out what their connections to humans are pretty early on, but I was still eager to learn the next portion about daemons in the story.
I wish I had read this book sooner; I'm excited to start the sequel in the trilogy and continue the story.
