This is magical, charming, and ageless. Lyra, a young orphan raised by scholars at Oxford, becomes entranced by the mystery of "Dust," a strange phenomenon about which no one seems to know anything definitive. Along with her constant companion, a daemon named Pan, Lyra sets out for the North in pursuit of the mystery, avoiding the Gobblers, befriending the Gyptians, and determined to save the children kidnapped for unknown (but surely nefarious!) purposes.
Everyone should read this lyrical, almost myth-like tale. A fantasy as compelling as Narnia and better than Harry Potter!

I enjoyed this series very much. While I liked the movie adaptation okay, the books are much better, as usual. Pullman is a master storyteller, and his writing is just marvelous, from character description to scenery to plot development. Lyra is a very likeable main character.
Un meraviglioso mondo ricco di personaggi con spessore, descritto minuziosamente e con grandissima originalità. Pullman è un genio.
FINALLY!
I have wanted to read this series since I heard about it over ten years ago. It took me forever and a day to finally get around to it, but it happened!
First off, I love books where the adults are idiots and/or evil, and it's kids that have to fix everything themselves. It's one of the reasons I love A Series of Unfortunate Events and The Secret Series so much. This book is very much in the same vein, and it's done really successfully.
I tend to not give synopsis's in my reviews because why would I? You can scroll up and read one! So instead I'm going to talk about the other things that were successful in this book.
1. The character development! (And the development of how characters perceive each other)
2. Narrators voice! (I LOVE IT)
3. Setting (I want to live here, and also know I would probably hate it...)
4. Clarity (I didn't need to understand a bunch of complicated laws or rules to read)
5. Good use of an overpowered object. (Because Lyra is too young to think to ask all the questions that could help her, the problems aren't all fixed as easy as they could be, and the tension build well)
Some things that didn't work:
1. The reveals felt a little out of nowhere and rushed.
2. The timeline of events is a bit confusing, even though it happens sequentially with flashbacks to before Kyra was born. (I have no idea how many days or how long anything takes... does it happen in a few months? A year? Who knows?)
I'm giving this book four stars because while it had some annoying bits, I JUST LOVED IT A LOT AND THAT'S THAT!
Highly recommend!

Not really my thing...a little too dark and vague for me. Plus the total lack of resolution kind of annoyed me. More at bookhopping.
