I really wanted to like this book as I have known about it and the subsequent controversy for years. Sadly, the book really did not live up to all the hype. The last 30 pages or so were actually really good and if the rest of the book had been that good, this could have easily been a five star story. Unfortunately, it wasn't and there were so many passages that I just found myself slogging through and not enjoying. Pullman doesn't know how to write action scenes and does not do a very good job of describing anything that happens in this story. It's all very confusing, very muddled and worst of all, very boring. Too bad cause I was really looking forward to reading the next two books in this series. Now, I really don't think I will be.
It took me a bit to get into this book, but once it starts moving, it's hard to stop! This series is incredible and so easy to read and enjoy. I love it!

I'm really not a fan of Lyra as a main character, but the world building makes up for most of her annoying characteristics. I didn't love this book but it kept my interest. 3.5 stars.

It's odd, reading this as an adult. There is so much complexity to the story that I didn't pick up on as a kid so it felt like I was reading it for the first time all over again.
Not sure if I want to finish the series after Pullman's insensitive tweets the other day. Why do childhood beloved authors from my childhood keep letting me down....
