Enjoyable buuuut...Britta...

She was quite annoying and a very "woe is me" type of character. Which I don't mind to a certain point! But the entire book I was just kinda disconnected from her I didn't feel close to her enough by the end of the book...if that makes any sense.

The idea of a girl hunter being hunted sounded awesome. Made me reminisce about Katniss but Britta is no Ms. Everdeen. Maybe she has the potential to be if she gains an actual backbone in the sequel but we'll see.

Speaking of sequel...this one is expected to be released, I believe, by the end of the year it might be one of those that I hold off on for a little due to the fact that this was an okay book I'm not jumping up and down ants in my pants excited for.

Man I really wanted to enjoy this book. I just felt like there wasn’t a lot of action and the mystery took forever to unravel. On top of that, the climax felt very rushed and last minute.

Let me tell you this it's a decent story it's not the best but it's not bad either. Very typical but could have been more exciting with a better plot.

Now the one thing I dislike is the ending seems to set up one of the biggest reading pet peeves... I'm not sure how I feel about it and only hope that I am wrong and the author will take it down a different path than normal.

Anyways it's a decent read nothing not life impacting but something that is enjoyable.

"Safety ensures survival"

Hey guys, so I finished Ever the Hunted (A Clash of Kingdoms #1) by Erin Summerill. This was a pretty good book, if I do say so myself. I easily got lost in the storyline. Sometimes maybe a bit too lost, lol. But it was just that easy to slip into the book, and before I knew it, I was flying through the pages. i was like, surely I missed something?? But when I back tracked, I hadnt. The story was just that flowing and of ease to breeze through. The writing was great, not packed with to much info, but having just enough that it was easy to navigate this new world. The descriptions were just enough so that I knew what was happening, but wasnt overwhelmed. I got to know the characters, but I wasnt too immeshed in trying to figure them out. It was a great balance. This story was just swirling with deceptions and betrayals and revelations and all that good stuff. I actually thought that the way the story was written, it effortlessly built up to some of the major plottwists. I mean, it made it not as shocking, but it helped a lot with just understanding how the character reacted to learning these truths and dealing with the fallout. Now, that was only in regards to the major shock of the story. There were several other surprises along the way. Most of them revolving around the people that the main character held close to her heart. First her father, then her Cohen, then...another whom I shall not name in case of spoiler. But a lot,a lot happened in this novel. And although this novel has many "travel scenes" they didnt feel like that at all. Usually I skim through scenes like that because it is all fluff and doesnt really contribute to the story. However, these travel scenes were just as crucial to the novel as any of the action scenes. The travel scenes did not drag, and even if it seemed like they were about to drag, BOOM, action event happens and stirs everything back up. So yes, I liked the plotline of this novel. And the ending, whew, that was a whirlwind, I couldnt read it fast enough as everything unfurled in rapid succession. Bang bang bang. Oy. I had to take a breather. Man. So yes, I really liked the novel.

Now, the main character Britta, she was amazing. So determined and focused and she almost never loses sight of her endgoal, even when the universe practically tries to shove her off course time and time again. I feel like she was the most influenced by her father through most of the novel, which obviously is because she is driven to find his killer. And during the journey to find the killer, she finds out alot about him, and about herself. Secrets, secrets everywhere. I think she acted appropriately and realistically as the world she thought she knew comes crashing down around her. The feelings she had about everything, they were believable and true. Britta has flaws, just like any other person, but she also has strengths. Both her flaws and strengths seem to be tethered to one particular person. Cohen. Gods. I loved Cohen. He was just so daring and dashing. Handsome and a handful. Protective to a fault. I just loved him so much. And the chemistry and pain between Brit and him was electric. *fans self* They were just so amazing together, even if sometimes he acted like a jerk or came on too headstrong/arrogant. Thats just men for ya. Cant live with em, cant live without them. Alright, there was another character that I really grew to admire, but I am afraid if I say who it is, it will spoiler something. and I would hate to do that. The person is someone who Brit ends up being really close with and shares a deep connection with. For people who have read this book, i think they will know who I am talking about. If you dont, gotta read this book. Haha. Alright, I think I prattled on long enough. As always, if you guys have any questions or comments, drop em below. Till next time. Bye

My Review: This is the second time I have read this title and I have to tell you that the only thing I remembered about it was Enat that was it. I didn't remember anything or anyone else at all. I really really wished what happened to her hadn't and I would love a prequel story about her. I am just saying that she is totally awesome and I love her!

So this one I thought it felt a lot lighter this time around than what I remember from the first time that I read it. It didn't feel so thick or heavy at all. Although death was around the corner for the main characters I really felt like it just didn't seem as bad as it could have been. I don't know it felt like killing light I guess you could say or peril light. I don't know.

I did like how the story unfolded it was very quick. I read this one at 74.6 pages an hour and got it done in just over 5 hours. So I would say that was pretty fast. It never stagnated and I liked that the two characters already had a relationship so you didn't have to worry about that insta love that this one would have had to have if they didn't already know each other. So I think that the author dodged a giant bullet with that one.

The ending was also very nice that although there was one thing left undone even if this book wouldn't have had a sequel it wouldn't have really needed it and it stands alone on its own. Although I think if that would have been the case a good epilogue would have been needed to round out the one thing that wasn't finished.

All in all, I think this would be a great title for someone who is just getting started with fantasy books and young adult. Because its light, quick, and really gives you a very simple world view for the world building as well as the magic that they use.

Note: SO after reading this one I was talking to a friend that had already read book two. And I am like ok so I think this, this, and this happens and she was like YES YES that is EXACTLY what happens. So now I am reading this second book with already knowing what happens because I guessed it and now I am all. Crying up I am so sad right now.

Go Into This One Knowing: Great Beginner Fantasy, Slight Open Ending, No Insta Love, Very Quick Pace.

I'm so disappointed this book didn't live up to all my expectations. First of all though: THAT COVER. (be still my heart..)
One thing that bugged me purely from a preference point of view, was the present tense narrative. It took me awhile to figure out what was bugging me about it and I think I'm in the majority who don't like present tense narratives (I'm also not a fan of first person more often than not, but again preference and not a say in if the book was good or not).
However I couldn't get over how... well....how plain this story was. I finished it wondering what the world looked like and figuring out how there was still a story past the 50 page mark. (Spoiler, there hardly is one).
Yet, I didn't really have to force myself to finish this book. Some part of it was enjoyable enough to actually finish and give this a medium rating. (Still figuring out what that might be, honestly.)
I can't look over some problematic areas of the book that others have brought up in the reviews as concerns. First: the use of rape as a plot-device. The Big Bad Guy, Tomas, is supposed to be this way because he constantly threatens Britta with sexual assault and this is supposed to help the story how?? Answer: it doesn't and it left a bad taste in my mouth every time it was brought up. Second, there's a small scene in this book where Britta and Enat laugh over the idea of women having a romantic relationship together. Like, "OMG that is hilarious, what a strange and stupid assumption to have, because that would never happen!" Maybe you can argue that in fantasy worlds the author can have this as something that doesn't exist, but this is YA and we need books that support all teens and not laugh at the idea of a lesbian relationship. It actually disgusts me to think this was deemed okay in 2016 (when it was released). And finally, not punching your abuser in the f**king face when he tries to apologize to you and instead just letting it go is infuriating. Britta was whiped for f**k sakes by this man and the author allows him to come in and say "I'm sorry pwease forgive me" and she's supposed to chew on her lip and let it go? What the FUCK.
I don't even care to bring up the stale as a four month old cracker characters or the weak story or the obvious twists, because these problematic things are all I can focus on.
I'm sorry pretty cover you deceived me and I'm sorry I couldn't love and whole-heartedly support a new authors book.

This was a fairly quick read and I mostly enjoyed it, though there could have been a bit more worldbuilding and reasoning behind the mistrust and violence between the two countries. Also, Cohen just wasn't a good romantic partner in my opinion. I really wanted something to happen with Leif. But anytime Cohen was around Britta just got so dopey about his smell or him and she acted like a ditz. It was a bit frustrating. I really liked Enat though, and I am curious enough about what could happen next that I'll definitely check out the sequel. Hopefully the worldbuilding will be in place by then.
