One of my slow reads so far and I'm speaking subjectively. It's mainly from deeming this narrative as something heavy, hence the multiple times I had to put down this book to give myself a rest.

It's definitely relatable, especially, to readers dealing with issues with their mothers plus religion.

A coming of age/learn who you are story. At times I found the writing unnecessarily detailed (I don’t need to know how you fixed the schedule at work specifically). But overall it was reflective and sometimes relatable.

It takes a lot for me to love a character in their 20s now that I’m decades past that season of life. I get impatient with them easily.

I loved this protagonist. The author shows all the layers of being a young caregiver but also wanting to be a young and free new professional out in the world - the emotional complexity and the family dynamics and the cultural complications, too. Wow.

Maame was slow for me at first but I ended up really enjoying it. It was a really lovely coming of age story about a woman in her 20s, which I don’t see very often because usually coming of age stories involve teens.  The sorry felt very real and I identified with Maddie in many ways, as someone who is also currently 25, about to be 26. Her complicated family dynamics were realistic and touching. Would definitely recommend reading it
