2.5 // Super quick read - and inspirational, I guess??? I'm glad they met and she could feed/lead/help him through life. Their friendship seemed real and sweet. Except when she let her controlling new husband exclude Maurice from holidays. Rude.

But also the entire thing just highlights the systemic problems around poverty in our country (still!) and one lady's good deeds isn't gonna change it, even by writing a book. Idk - maybe I'm just a cynical millennial.

Btw, the abuse Laura's family ensured by her father was just like, swept under a rug? I hope everyone started going to therapy because woof.

Wow, This book surprised me with how good it is. It made me laugh and cry.

I enjoyed the story of this unlikely friendship. A lot of it was difficult to read both Maurice's family story and Laura's but you always knew you were headed for a happy ending.

Such a sweet story

This book was so inspirational and moving. I found the author's story to be engaging and she was very personal. I started this book and read it straight through. It made me think about how so often people judge someone else's life or how they look. You never know how you can change a person's life just through kindness.
slow-paced

I read this book based on a HPB customer recommendation. I found the story both compelling and frustratingly written. While I understand Laura feeling the need to tell us about her life, I was hoping to hear most about the interaction between herself & Maurice. It seems like the autobiographical parts about her family are not necessary when I read this, but perhaps they were added to give the reader a sense of equal footing between the two main characters. Maurice had it bad, but so did Laura: see we aren't that different.

I'd be curious to know if they still keep in touch. And I'm glad Laura stopped & went back to Maurice that first day.

Who we say yes to makes a difference.

I wish there was more written from Maurice's perspective besides one small letter at the end of the book. But it was a short sweet read.

I am torn on my review of this book, it is a good story but could have been written much better (especially considering she had help writing the story). I would have appreciated hearing much more from Maurice and his thoughts on this relationship. There was a lot written about Laura and her life, though it is good to hear her backstory, I would have appreciated an equal backstory from Maurice's perspective.
