GREAT story !

So interesting and inspirational! Heart-breaking, eye-opening, and humorous at times.

Schroff's story of her mother's death gave me a little more peace about my own mother's death.

Amazing what kind of impact that Laura and Maurice made on each other. Loved to hear their stories!

You never know how one small random act of kindness can change the world.

Very nice story, especially since it's true. The author's style was just okay, but it left me feeling good about humanity.

This book is a fast read and a nice story. Laura seems truly lovely and caring. BUT, as an educator of 19 years, I struggled with the “friendship” between her and Maurice. Yes, children need positive people in their lives but this one didn’t sit well with me. I know that it was the 80s, and Laura never wanted more than a friendship, but it was odd. Some people might Michael to be the villain, but it wasn’t. He was just concerned. To me, Maurice is the hero of the story, and I hope that he and his family are well! He seems happy!

I received this book through the GoodReads First-Reads program. Although the cover on my book looks nothing like the picture here, it's the same story.

I enjoyed the book and thought it was a good story.

There is a fair amount about Maurice and Laura, together, and how they effect each others lives, but there is a lot of back-story about Laura's life and growing up. I felt this was more a book for Laura than it was a book for Maurice. I am sure had it been written by Maurice, it would have had a completely different flavor.

I found the story compelling, and it moved me through, and although I had hoped for a happy ending, and the book does leave off with everyone in a "good place", I found myself disappointed. Disappointed that laura didn't make enough of a difference, that Maurice still got caught up in the problems of his life, but at the same time I did find the book a worthwhile read. It's hard to explain why I felt a little disappointed at the end without telling future readers too much about the book, and I completely understand if others disagree with my feelings on the book. That is part of the great thing about reading, that we each learn and get something different from the book!

To be honest I didn't "read" it. It was my first audible. This was a fascinating story. It caught my attention from the beginning no didn't let go. I liked the honest first person approach to the book.

Great story

This was assigned reading for my daughter’s Middle School summer reading. All grades read the book, so I was curious. I’m so very glad I read it as well! The bond created between Maurice and Laura was powerful to hear about. The positive influence Laura provided encouraged Maurice to push himself to get ahead instead of simply survive. The things that Maurice didn’t understand as a child growing up with food insecurity were shocking. This book should be required reading in all schools.
